On Friday the 7th of June a group from Batteriid Architects came to a reception in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona –with representatives from Henning Larsen Architects; from Studio Olafur Eliasson; from Harpa and the Ministry of Education and Culture in Iceland and from the constructor IAV – together with a number of other distinguished invited guests. The occasion was The Award Giving Ceremony of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2013.

The day began with a press conferance in the MvdR Pavilion but at noon the award giving ceremony started. Mrs. Giovanna Carnevali, Director of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation;

Mr. Xavier Trias, the Mayor of Barcelona; Mr. Jan Truszczynski, director General for Education, Training, Culture and Youth of the European Commission and Mr. Wiel Arets, Chairman of the Jury gave short speeches and handed over the award – a sculpture, consisting of a cut from the original pillars of the pavilion and a document. The representatives of the design team then gave short addresses and thanked.

After the award ceremony Antoni Wives, President of the Mies van der Rohe foundation invited to a lunch at the National Art Museum of Catalunia where he opened the exhibition Constructing Europe: 25 years of Architecture.

The day after at the Pavilion a seminar Breaking New Ground was held with the participation of many prominent architects – as Bjarke Ingels, Kamiel Klaasse, Emilio Tunón, Antón García-Abril – to name a few.
