The design of the building is based upon a 1st prize entry in a limited “Design and Build Competition” held by the Municipality of Hafnarfjordur in the year 2006. The building contains a 50m swimming pool (FINA standard), a smaller teaching pool and a children’s pool, a slide, hot tubs and a steam bath. The building also contains a health centre including change rooms with showers, cardio, group work out and physiotherapy facilities. The Swimming Association of Hafnarfjordur and the Swimming Association for Handicapped are also located in the building. The big lobby area therefore serves as a multiuse space for all different functions depending on the program each day.

The planned outdoor area contains a 25m swimming pool, children’s pool, two slides, hot tubs, steam bath and a sauna.

Good accessibility for all functions of the centre was a keynote in the design of the building.
