The gas and composting plant of Sorpa at Álfsnes is the next big step in future environmental conservation. With the establishment of the plant, it will become feasible to reuse 95% of all household waste in the capital area. The production of methane gas will increase significantly, sufficient to power about 7-8,000 methane vehicles. The plant will also yield 10-12,000 tons of soil conditioner, which can be used for land reclamation.
The building is designed to blend seamlessly into the environment, with turf laid over most of the structure, and odor pollution will be minimized. The plant is also intended to provide an excellent working environment, with ample daylight entering the large workspaces.
Beyond its processing role, the plant will also serve as an educational center, welcoming visitors and introducing them to this future solution in recycling and energy production. Visitors will also be able to tour the plant safely via a special walkway above the processing floor.
