Balancing Past and Future
The project aims to strike a balance between preserving historical traces and making meaningful use of the town’s landscape for the future. The goal is to unite past and future by safeguarding memories and creating new opportunities for the next chapter in Grindavík’s story. Rather than simply rebuilding, Grindavík will be reshaped into a unique destination for both residents and visitors, where they can enjoy and learn from its heritage for years to come
Key Focus Areas of the Proposal
Evidence of the recent disasters, such as fissure lines, lava formations, and building remnants, will be preserved and repurposed in innovative and safe ways.
Particular emphasis will be placed on safeguarding historic structures like Hópið, the Salt House, and the Workers’ House on Víkurbraut.
Walking paths, exhibitions, and signage will be introduced to highlight the forces of nature and their effects in a visible and accessible manner.
Some damaged buildings will be removed as part of the renewal process.
Next Steps
Residents of Grindavík have already been introduced to the initial proposal and invited to provide comments and suggestions. The proposal will then be refined and presented once more to the community. Following this, efforts will begin to secure funding and partnerships to ensure that the proposal is carried out purposefully and sustainably.
By taking these steps, Grindavík will combine its rich historical heritage with forward-looking development, creating a truly distinctive town for generations to come.
