Inpatient Unit and Psychiatric Ward
The expansion of the Hospital in Akureyri is a significant event in Iceland's healthcare service. For decades, the psychiatric ward has been in inadequate condition, with insufficient bed space and generally limited facilities for the necessary services. Therefore, a fundamental premise in our design is to ensure efficient and flexible, tailored housing for the operations, based on the team's experience and knowledge from previous projects. In our effort, we emphasize balancing the demands of scientific medical treatments with the art of good patient care. This might be the best description of what a very good hospital should be: ensuring the safety of everyone involved, maximizing potential cooperation and integration of operations, and delivering a progressive and leading university hospital.
Scientific treatment provides patients with the best that medicine can offer, employing the best available practices and evidence-based care processes, along with the efficient use of all available technology and resources. Through targeted integration and design of these elements, we enhance mutual trust and security between patients and staff.
The art of good care is based on the understanding that it needs to take place in a healthy environment designed, both in human and physical terms, to comfort, inform, and heal patients and support them and their families in a calm and effective manner.
